Walk-about on Cayo Carenero Panama

I'm taking a walk today between rain storms from the marina into the barrio to search for the grocery store - I'm out of gin and tonic...lol

These are the pictures along the way to and from the store... some have comments... many do not... I think the pictures speak for themselves... or should I say for the locals... imagine what the future holds in store... a way of life few Americans appreciate or have ever seen.

I found the store... no limes in this tropical paradise so I didn't buy any gin but did purchase a 6-pack of tonic US$5.70, a 6.5oz bag of Lays Potato Chips US$3.85 and a quart of Ocean Spray Cranberry Cocktail US$2.50.

The temperature outside is 91F with 64% humidity... so only a mild case of head-to-toe perspiration when I returned from the five block hike along the local dirt path, across the flowing creek and around several muddy boggs requiring good balance walking across on tropical wooden planks.

The walk-about starts going down the dock... with a Lab looking for fish... (click any pix for a larger size image)

Someone doing laundry... Oh my that's tidy whites!

Small crabs with homes in the mud...

Note the dog relaxing in the shade... while mom get's dad's panga ready - nice PVC roller on the log stand.

Chickens scratching for anything to eat in the beach trash...

Barrio store for locals

The muddy dirt path changes to concrete...

Water-taxi drivers hang out next to the grocery store waiting to take you to your destination in their panga outboard boat

Wannabe panga water-taxi men preparing to repair a skiff with some fiberglass mat but I did not see any resin.

Zoom from across the waters at the store back towards the marine several hundred yards away. Imagine the chance of meeting SECOND STAR with International Navistar twin main engines.

YUREKA!  THE GROCERY STORE - I found it!

New paint job - looks nice - congratulations!

School? Yes... with a padalock on the chain-link fence gate after hours.

Elementry school girls walking home

Nice planked and carved long-boat.

Church - at night they preach with a 200watt PA amplifier VERY L-O-U-D!!!

Vulture like bird eating a broken coconut.

Carved (from a log) long boat under construction

Entrance to the "church"

"My panga is going to be bigger than your panga when we grow up and become water-taxi drivers."

Hope you enjoyed seeing the barrio from my walk-through... Next week (March 17th) a movie crew will be shooting in Bocas del Toro and the city is under orders to "clean the trash from the streets and sidewalks" per a drive around truck 'PA' broadcasting... time will tell - sure is a lot of trash laying around!
