For the last eight years, photographer Jody MacDonald has spent her days jetting around the world, finding the highest points she can, and jumping off of them. Luckily, she brought her camera around for the ride.
An avid paraglider, MacDonald has made a living off photographing the sport and its athletes for the likes of National Geographic, Outside Magazine, and Niviuk. In the last five years, she’s traveled to more than fifty countries, including such exotic locales as Morocco, Mozambique, and India.
MacDonald posts a ton of her photography on her website, but she shared some photos from some recent trips.
There is a whole lot more to the story than paragliding... see the catamaran sailboat in the bottom right corner? Click the link below and learn more about Jody MacDonald's travels around the world as the mate on DISCOVERY... it was a dream voyage of a lifetime... kite surfing expedition style around the world... going where only the chosen few get to visit... with a private yacht.
A seafaring expedition to seek out the world's most remote and dynamic kite surfing and surfing locations. A quest to experience native cultures in their natural state. To consciously explore the Oceans of the world with passion, integrity, and sensitivity to the cultures and ecosystems we inhabit. To build awareness, global concern, and inspire solutions to the environmental crisis.
We are water men and women who are passionate about exploring some of the few remaining untouched areas of the world - and we're doing it in style. Style to us means doing the things we love while operating as sustainably and as mindfully as we can of our natural environment. We aim to operate Discovery, our catamaran at nearly carbon neutral and aspire to produce films and media which will heighten awareness of environmental and social problems the Earth faces in places few people get a chance to see.
Offshore Odysseys is a worldwide adventure business that launched in 1999. In the ensuing seven years we sailed over 45,000 miles across the South Pacific and Asia providing high impact, remote sailing, surfing and kitesurfing charters. In 2004 we hosted Raphael Salles and the F.One kitesurfing team in Fiji, which culminated in a feature length Stance film and provided the inspiration to create The Best Odyssey.
In 2006 we launched The BEST Odyssey, “a World Kiteboarding and Paragliding Expedition" by selling ownership shares in the DISCOVERY yacht partnership along with sponsorship with Best Kiteboarding, one of the world's most recognized kiteboarding brands.
Since launching in December of 2006 The Best Odyssey:
- Documented over 130 virgin locations
- Sailed 54,000+ miles
- Circumnavigated the Earth
- Rounded the Cape of Good Hope
- Visited fifty countries
- Received coverage in over sixty full-length magazine articles in five languages including features in Forbes, Outside, Islands and National Geographic Adventurer
- Produced 17 short films and a full-length feature is in production
We completed our mission as scheduled on October, 2011. Our beloved vessel Discovery received a major refit in Spain to operate with a much reduced CO2 impact and many major upgrades to help her sail faster, lighter, and in more comfort in anticipation of a new partnership called The Cabrinha Quest, a five year expedition which launched in September of 2012. The Cabrinha Quest is another 5 year expedition, in partnership with Cabrinha Kites.
Like all well managed businesses someone had to have the dream and knowledge of how to put it together and make it a reality... enter:
CEO and Founder, GAVIN MCCLURG
Offshore Odysseys is managed and operated by Gavin McClurg. When it comes to finding wind and waves in remote places, Gavin is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable and experienced skippers in the world today. He grew up on boats in the Pacific Northwest and commercially fished in the Bering Sea before getting into sailing in the mid 90's. He has 13 straight years at sea under sail across all three oceans of the world. He's rounded both Cape's; racked up over 160,000 blue water miles; sailed solo across the Atlantic; through the Java Sea and Malacca Straits; and is passionate about protecting wild places for future generations. He will be using this first-hand experience and passion to guide his second partnership, The Cabrinha Quest, on its mission of discovery.
JODY MACDONALD
Award winning photographer and Offshore Odysseys Creative Director Jody MacDonald (www.jodymacdonaldphotography.com) has been recently featured in National Geographic, Islands, Forbes, the BBC, National Geographic Adventure, and GEO. She is usually hanging from a paraglider, harnessed in at the top of a pitching mast, far beneath the ocean, or camped out in the Namibian dessert to capture her next shot. She will manage all aspects of media and imagery with The Cabrinha Quest and maintain our high standards of media content.
This is only a snapshot of who, what, where and why... for unless you have been at sea you really only know the beach... which is a drop in the bucket of living life BIG!
Enjoy...
